Better Sailing Programme 2014
Summer is coming and if you haven’t already done so, it is time to get down to Chelmarsh and get out on the water.
In the past the club has run an RYA Level 3 Better Sailing Course, as a progression for those who have learned to sail but who wish to improve their skill further. The two day course was always something of a hostage to the weather and in the case of calm weather (or excessively rough weather), the whole course could be lost.
The solution for the last two yearshas been to run a series of improver sessions throughout the season in to which our members can dip in and out of according to their personal training needs. The full programme is shown below.
The cost this year will be £5 per person per session, or if you want to sign up for a block booking of all the sessions then an advance payment of £45 will suffice.
The first session is intended as the title suggests, to encourage folks to ‘Get back in to sailing’. There won’t be time for a lot of individual instruction to take place but with three assistants to help, it should assist some of you to resume your sailing activities with confidence. This session is FREE of charge, and with advertising support from the RYA we are hoping to encourage people back to the sport and to the club who perhaps stopped sailing some time ago, as well as our own sailors who have perhaps not sailed much recently and require a bit of support and encouragement to resume.
The majority of the sessions are 2hrs long, from 2pm to 4pm, with the intention that trainees can continue to practice what has just been taught after the formal session ends.
There are however a few exceptions:-
6th September. Pete Townend’s session on Asymmetric Spinnaker Flying is likely to be longer than 2hrs. Pete will provide details nearer the time.
13th& 20th September. Start racing (1) and (2) is being run by Chris Cousins from the RYA. These will be all day sessions from 10am to 4pm. It is hoped that by the 20th the participants on this part of the course will be entering a team in the Interfleet Races
